Amazon Kindle: Blind Faith

From the readers' review: Blind Faith (Kindle Edition)

1. This is my first read of C.J. Lyons and wow! What a first impression! This novel is just awesome. It hooks you from the start. Very soon at the start of the book, the protagonist of the story, Sarah, witnesses the exection of her husband and son's killer (who is also a serial killer). The one thing that Sarah wanted.... needed.... from this man was his admission of where he'd buried her loved ones bodies. He'd confessed to the others. But he didn't give Sarah the one thing she wanted to know. It'd been two years since she'd lost her husband and son and Sarah tries to move on, tries to give those closest in her life the impression that she's moving on, but can't until she finds out where her family is.

2. I read several of CJ Lyons' medical thrillers and love her writing! This novel is not a medical thriller but I was hooked from the beginning. Sarah's husband and son are killed by a serial killer. She witnesses the exection of the man who destroyed her life but she doesn't know where this man buried the bodies of her family. He took that secret with him to the grave. Sarah is distraught but tries to move on with her life. She finds she can not go on until she finds her husband and son. I don't want to give away too much but the rest of the book is about her journey of discovery with lots of twists and turns!

Review

TOP PICK! 4 1/2 Stars: This story is so fast paced with so many mesmerizing characters, "fantastic" is not high enough praise. Lyons proves once again that she is a master of suspense and nontraditional romance.~RT Book Reviews

BLIND FAITH by CJ Lyons had five stars written all over it from the moment I started reading. This is a great novel, and I would definitely recommend CJ Lyons and her thrillers to readers. ~Chicklitplus.com/blind-faith-cj-lyons/

Amazon Kindle: The Mill River Recluse

From the readers's review: The Mill River Recluse (Kindle Edition)

1. Having been loaned a Kindle from a friend, I immediately went in search of books that were inexpensive. I stumbled on The Mill River Recluse and the reviews were what made me really want to read this book. Having never written a review before, when I completed this book I felt I HAD to write a review. I was so wonderfully surprised to the depth of characters, storylines and twists and turns along the way. I stayed up all night just to finish it!! I found myself chuckling at times and caught myself off guard with tears rolling down my face. You became part of Mill River and its community almost from the first page. I really didn't want the story to end.

2. A feel-good story that never turns saccharine, _The Mill River Recluse_ will not disappoint. Indeed, as the last paragraphs close, the reader wants nothing more than just to spend a few more pages in Chan's Mill River.

Product Description

Disfigured by the blow of an abusive husband, and suffering her entire life with severe social anxiety disorder, the widow Mary McAllister spends almost sixty years secluded in a white marble mansion overlooking the town of Mill River, Vermont. Her links to the outside world are few: the mail, the media, an elderly priest with a guilty habit of pilfering spoons, and a bedroom window with a view of the town below.

Most longtime residents of Mill River consider the marble house and its occupant peculiar, though insignificant, fixtures. An arsonist, a covetous nurse, and the endearing village idiot are among the few who have ever seen Mary. Newcomers to Mill River--a police officer and his daughter and a new fourth grade teacher--are also curious about the reclusive old woman. But only Father Michael O'Brien knows Mary and the secret she keeps--one that, once revealed, will change all of their lives forever.

The Mill River Recluse is a story of triumph over tragedy, one that reminds us of the value of friendship and the ability of love to come from the most unexpected of places.

Amazon Kindle: The Help

From the readers' view: The Help (Kindle Edition)

1. A new classic has been born. Kathryn Sockett's "The Help" will live in hearts and minds, be taught in schools, be cherished by readers. The three women who form its core, idealistic Skeeter, loving Aibileen, and sarcastic, sassy Minny, narrate their chapters each in a voice that is distinctive as Minny's caramel cake no one else in Jackson, Mississippi, can duplicate.

2. This is the best book I have read in years! I can't recommend it enough! It is fabulous and I think they will make a movie out of it. I would compare it to the writings of Carson McCullers, Harper Lee, Truman Capote and even Margaret Mitchell. The story grabs you and doesn't let you go. You can smell the melted tar on the Mississippi roads, the toil in the cotton fields, the grits burning on the stove. The theme is the indomitable will of human beings to survive against all odds - because of the color of their skin. It is a heart-wrenching account and you will never fondly remember the times of the Jim Crow laws (if you ever did). The pure, down and out bitchery of the white ladies who become dissatisfied with their maids and proceed to ruin their lives is portrayed vividly. The desperation of the maids' circumstances is truly touching. I have laughed and cried my way through this book and plan to re-read it. I highly recommend this book because it is going to be talked about as the best book of the year.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Starred Review. Four peerless actors render an array of sharply defined black and white characters in the nascent years of the civil rights movement. They each handle a variety of Southern accents with aplomb and draw out the daily humiliation and pain the maids are subject to, as well as their abiding affection for their white charges. The actors handle the narration and dialogue so well that no character is ever stereotyped, the humor is always delightful, and the listener is led through the multilayered stories of maids and mistresses. The novel is a superb intertwining of personal and political history in Jackson, Miss., in the early 1960s, but this reading gives it a deeper and fuller power. A Putnam hardcover (Reviews, Dec. 1). (Feb.)

From Bookmarks Magazine

In writing about such a troubled time in American history, Southern-born Stockett takes a big risk, one that paid off enormously. Critics praised Stockett's skillful depiction of the ironies and hypocrisies that defined an era, without resorting to depressing or controversial clich√©s. Rather, Stockett focuses on the fascinating and complex relationships between vastly different members of a household. Additionally, reviewers loved (and loathed) Stockett's three-dimensional characters—and cheered and hissed their favorites to the end. Several critics questioned Stockett's decision to use a heavy dialect solely for the black characters. Overall, however, The Help is a compassionate, original story, as well as an excellent choice for book groups.
